A database can get faster at answering a familiar test without getting equally faster at unfamiliar work. AI-assisted development makes tailoring an implementation to published queries cheaper.

Database researcher Thomas Neumann’s October 27 essay asks what benchmark wins really measure, and proposes changing workloads, hidden queries and tests that include data updates.

Read the replies, too. The pgrust creator says the disputed optimizations also exist in established databases; Andreas Kipf notes that real production workloads genuinely repeat queries and benefit from caching.

A useful disagreement about what “faster” means, rather than proof that a particular project is cheating.
