AI-assisted cancer safety review: a study of clinical notes and human oversight
Cancer immunotherapy can cause side effects whose details are buried in clinical notes. A new Nature Cancer study tests an AI system that highlights evidence for six types of immune-related adverse events, helping staff review the records.
In a randomized crossover study with 17 clinical research staff, assistance cut annotation time by about 2.7 minutes per note, with improvements in accuracy and agreement. A separate three-month silent deployment tested performance on incoming notes.
This is evidence for assisted record review. The study did not establish better patient outcomes, and the authors call for external validation.
